University of the Western Cape

As many of you know, BCS never tours without a visit to at least one university.  Today we are visiting the beautiful campus of the University of Western Cape (UWC).  We'll have a noon outdoor concert, followed by a campus tour and a joint rehearsal with the a UWC chorus called Joyful Harmonies.  UWC is located in the Bellville suburb of Cape Town.  In 1960, as a result of the Separate University Education Bill, UWC was established by the South African government as a university for colored people only.  Since 1994 this university has become an integrated and multiracial institution.

It seems only right to mention one of our hosts who has been responsible for almost all of our singing engagements of our tour: Ms. Henriette Weber - UWC Director - Centre for the Performing Arts.  Ms. Weber is the person who set up all of our primary and secondary school visits that the singers have loved.  She has met us at every stop and has made the performance part of our trip so extremely rewarding.  Our kids have met and sung with their counterparts from age 2 (literally) through the university age.  We have learned new songs, dances, languages and rhythms - thanks largely to Ms. Weber and her contacts throughout the Cape Town area.

Another wonderful thing about visiting the University?  Internet access!

After our day at the university, our bus got stuck in the mud right outside the Center for Performing Arts.  We had a blast playing and running around until the replacement bus arrived.  See below:
